Gardening Tips

I found this helpful information on theHome Depot Gardening site…
The formula for designing new gardens is simple, and it all begins with a plan. A plan allows you to complete stages as your budget allows and make sure that what you do this season won’t have to be undone next season.
Collect pictures of scenes that please you.
Tastes vary. Some people like precise formal gardens, some want to play croquet on a big lawn, others like the informal country look.
Take an inventory.
Do a “floor plan” of your property on a piece of graph paper.
Consider your needs and preferences.
Do you want to improve your view? Would you like to increase your sense of privacy? Are there unsightly areas you’d like to screen?

Santa Monica Real Estate Blog – Thursday 09-02-2010 – Twilight Concert on the Pier Tonight!

An icon of American music born in New Orleans, Dr. John is indelibly linked to the traditions and singularity of the city’s musical and cultural heritage. Mac Rebennack burst onto the rock & roll scene in the late 60s as Dr. John, the Night Tripper, merging the Rhythm and Blues, voodoo rhythms and chants of his native New Orleans to create a persona perfect for the psychedelic era. Over the years he’s thrown Jazz, Classic American Songbook, Zydeco, Boogie Woogie and Rock into the musical mix.
In 1972 he recorded “Dr. John’s Gumbo,” an album covering several standards with one original, considered a cornerstone in New Orleans music. “In 1972, I recorded Gumbo, an album that was both a tribute to and my interpretation of the music I had grown up with in New Orleans in the 1940s and 1950s. I tried to keep a lot of the little changes that were characteristic of New Orleans, while working my own funknology on piano and guitar.”  The next year, with local legend Allen Toussaint producing and The Meters backing, Dr. John released the seminal New Orleans funk album “In the Right Place.” In the same way that “Gumbo” began his career-long reputation as an esteemed interpreter of New Orleans standards, “In the Right Place” established Dr. John as New Orleans’ preeminent ambassador.
On this closing night of our 26th season, we promise you that you are in “The Right Place” for “Such a Night!”
Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, Eddie Baytos can be said to be from N’Wahlins via Hollywood. A staple of the Southland’s music scene, Baytos is both musician – accordion, piano, keyboards, frottoir (washboard) – choreographer, composer and producer.  Grounded in Zydeco, New Orleans Funk, Blues and Tex-Mex, the Nervis Brothers incorporate Cumbias, Cuban, Forro’ and Ska to “…bring the world closer through music and dance!” Eddie Baytos & the Nervis Brothers clearly play “World Mardi Gras Music” for your dining and dancing pleasure!

Santa Monica Real Estate Blog – Thursday 08-12-2010 – Twilight Concert on the SM Pier tonight!

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Not many bands can say they’ve recorded with such diverse artists as Chaka Khan, Dave Matthews, Talib Kweli and John Scofield. Nor can many, if any, bands lay claim to opening for The Rolling Stones on one tour and having Stevie Wonder sit in with them on the next. The enduring musical relationships Soulive has developed, from the aforementioned artists to Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Joshua Redman, Robert Randolph, Kenny Garrett, The Roots, Fred Wesley, Ivan Neville and so many others, speak volumes about both how versatile and popular these talented musicians are.
Brothers Neal Evans, Hammond B3 organ, and Alan, drums, along with guitarist Eric Krasno have built a body of work known for its grooves and catchy, upbeat tunes while incorporating their brand of jazz, hip-hop, rock, soul, funk, R & B, blues. Soulive signed with legendary jazz label Blue Note Records in 2000. Six years later, Soulive would be the first band signed to the new Stax Records, home to the soul tradition built by Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers and Sam and Dave. Ever forward looking, Soulive has launched Royal Family Records, giving them full artistic control over their own recordings and making it possible for Soulive to discover and develop emerging artists and talent. Dig this: they have just released a brand new studio recording of Beatles covers, entitled “Rubber Soulive!”
Break: As in “breakbeat.” That ten second slice of percussive magic in the middle of a funk song that, when looped together by progressive South Bronx DJs in the 1970s, became the basis of the hip-hop movement. Arkestra: Out-there jazzer Sun Ra’s funkafied concept of the stuffy classical orchestra. Flip the script and you wind up with a unique definition of the Los Angeles based ensemble known as TheBreakestra.
Formed by Dr. Miles Tackett, “Musicman,” in 1996, they began as the house band for the legendary club called the Breaks. The band is rooted in deep funk, soul, jazz fever and musical friendships. A Breakestra show is about dancing and swinging, musicians on stage getting loose and playing serious grooves. Breakestra has a way of invigorating breakbeats, paving the way for the funkily naïve to embrace the rhythmic revolution that James Brown kicked off more than thirty years ago!
We ask you: “What are the first three letters of FUNK?”

I figured to share this. I drove by the mall on my way to the office and let me say that it was a madhouse!! Cars flooded everywhere, people filled the sidewalks…everywhere! Good news for Santa Monica’s economy!! Unfortunately the weather is forecasted to be cloudy, drizzly and overcast for the weekend. But it’s not stopping the tourism and shopping.

Santa Monica Place Grand Opening Today! – Parking information

Happy Friday everyone! I hope your week has been a fast and productive one.
Today, Santa Monica will experience a very high spike in traffic! Us locals are very familiar and have acclamated to the usual surge in Summer beach and tourism traffic. But, today will be very different….The Santa Monica Place will have it’s Grand Opening this morning at 10am. The entire area will be a madhouse! I drove by yesterday and quickly realized that I should have driven around the madhouse because I was averaging 1mph and got home a half mile down the street in about a half hour :(
